An Ode

Thursday, January 4th, 2007

Powder, powder, powder
Oh my powder
Wonderfully powdery
Deliciously powderful
Eerily soft and fluffy powder
Relucently bidding powder goodbyes

Yes is it is an ode to Powder. The gloriously white, fluffy, soft, cold, yummy stuff that falls from the sky. It is happening in abundance at the moment. To date over the last 48 hours we have had 53cm. 35cm on one day! The Trans Canadian highway has been shut in both directions for the last 2 days. People are stuck here, 9 bus loads of people.  Some are even sleeping in cars in the right hand lane of the highway all night, hoping to get out. Truck (Semi’s) are everywhere. Unable to escape a truck fortified highway, you have to squeeze between them dodging and weaving between the hauling engines and long carriages.

It makes for some interesting times over at Jiggers, our local watering hole (Read- Pub). It is normally only locals that go there, but at the moment everyone comes in and plays pool. We went last night with Lara and Sonja. It was a good time. Bought chicken wings, with our jugs of beer and had nachos! It was great fun just chatting around, good times. Except when Sonja said to me that “You’re a Smelly Pirate Hooker” then she went on to say- quoting her “Oughta punch you in the Ovaries” She didn’t really say those things, she just loves that movie-Anchorman. I however am not to sure if I like it. I love it, so many quotes, to small a brain to remember them all. If only I could package it up and squeeze it into my brain.

The highways were closed because of the fact that there were strong possibilities of Avalanches in the Kicking Horse Pass, and in Rogers Pass. Things are not dire at the moment, for now the highway is opened up again. People are still hanging around cause of all the beautiful powder on the hill. Oh how lucky I am to have 4 days off….. I’m going to be a sore man by the end of the week. Flying Dutchman here we come! Black all the way baby, bring it on!!!

I like to stretch myself when snowboarding. I do however take it all safely. I just purchased a knee brace, for my shitty knee. So I don’t blow it out in mid season. I have a helmet on the way. I also like to ride with people that are above my level. Mind you I have only been riding for the last 2 weeks. 15th December was the first day that I snowboarded. I was hooked from my first run. It is an amazing feeling, hurts the legs though. The reason I ride above my capabilities is it makes me a better boarder. Go hard or go home, is my motto at the moment. I have made my own style, which I’m sure will be refined as the season goes on. It is part surfer, part old skool skateboarder, part snowboarder. Quite eclectic, you could say. It sure isn’t orthodox, no matter what people say. I get down the hill without hurting myself (most of the time) and that is the whole point. The fun bit is throwing in the moves, and pretend that your riding a surf board on the nice long edges of the transport road (Cat track). Ahh the fun.

Late Xmas Message

Friday, December 29th, 2006

Thought i should update you on what happened on Xmas day. It snowed. I worked. It turned out to be the awesome xmas day of year so far. It was snowing almost all day up at the Hill. A white Christmas, plus snow!! I’m still in love with the stuff. I came home, and dinner was set out with all the trimmings, plus around 15 other family members. It was cool eating Turkey, home cooked Ham, eating pie etc. I was totally stuffed. I then went over to my friend Lauren’s Place, where they were cooking there Dinner. So i tried to help with that. Didn’t end up eating till 10:30pm. It was still a great dinner. Great company as well. As an added touch, Clint and Ruth both Veggies, cooked the Turkey and did almost everything. They even had some Turkey! They rock!
Hope everyone got what they wanted for Xmas. I got some socks, from the lady that i live with. It was cool. Other than that i only got some T-shirts from Threadless. It was from Jess, i got her the same. Still waiting for them to come, will put photos up when i get them.

They have boxing day in Canada as well. Not sure what it is for, still worked. It was a cruisey day. i then went over to Amanda and Sonja’s place, were they made dinner. Meatballs and stuff. Awesome again, drunk beer and generally had a great time. They are Albertans (from the province of Alberta- don’t hold it against them :P) They are awesome people, and they bought me a Nalgene, it is totally amazing and i can’t believe that they got it for me. It is unbreakable drinking container. It makes my home made CD and free Calender seem shitty. They loved them though. More the thought than the price i say!

So that is my day or 2. Not bad, i say. I have to work for New Year Eve and New Year;s Day. It isn’t going to be a pretty day, but i have done work on 4 hours sleep. Bring it on!!

Oh almost forgot to say Merry Xmas and hope every one stays health and enjoys the New year!

So sore

Friday, December 22nd, 2006

I’m so sore. I can hardly move. I had a big day yesterday. It was so BIG. I destroyed a snowboard, took the edge out. it is in the shop now getting fixed, hopefully. It was a rock board (one you can bash around and is crappy) but i felt so bad for Tyler. He lent it to me. Tyler was cool about it though, the is from near Regina, Sa. I’m going again today, hopefully when i can move. Need to go and catch the bus though. Speaking of which the big bus that we normally catch caught on fire the other day, just minutes after i got off it. The generator was to blame. So the bus company is waiting for that to be sent in and fixed. It’s all happening in Golden.

Belgian Beers

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

Last night we went to the Belgian Beer cafe for drinks that IEP had organise (see previous post) for Work Canada people. So there was probably about 8 people there, most of them heading to Whistler (near Vancouver) for the season so we didn’t actually get to meet anyone from Perth going to Kicking Horse but hopefully there will be some Aussies heading to Kicking Horse! But it was cool talking about canada and skiing/boarding. Travel talk always makes me excited.

Yesterday was the 16th of October which is significant because we fly out of Perth on the 16th of November, so we only have 1 month to go!! It’s getting very exciting. I told my work that i will be leaving them last week so i’m due to finish work on the 10th of November (thank god!).

Count down to departure is on!!

All ready

Saturday, September 23rd, 2006

Well we picked up our tickets today. I also picked up my travel bag as well. Got it 50% off from Kathmandu. I love there sales.

So back to the tickets, we paid all the money last week, so just needed to pick them up this week. It sucks! I got a piece of paper for my ticket. Yep, an A4 sheet. That is it, nothing more, no neat little book with wafer thin pages in it, no funky red writing. I’m annoyed, i paid almost 2 times as much as Jess, yet she gets a nice little book with the funky red writing and wafer thin pages. Grrr, how sucky is that. I would have thought that would be the least that they could do for me. I am so going to be an ass now. I will try and drink them dry, won’t work but im going to try. Anyhow that is enough of a rant from me. Apart from that everything is going along dandy. It’s about 6 weeks till we leave now. Everything is slowley creaping up on us. Work is boring, but what is new? it always is. Have fun.

The beginning…

Thursday, September 21st, 2006

I guess i should tell you why I’m moving to canada and why kicking horse? So listen up…

I’ve been to Canada twice before, once with family in 1997 and again in 2003 by myself. So i’ve always wanted to go back and actually work in canada. This year i had a few things that made me wake up and say to myself what do i actually want to do with my life. Things life breaking up with boyfriend, losing friends, dad getting cancer, leaving church, leaving job and moving from Sydney to Perth to be with family. It’s been a big year!! I went out with my boyfriend for 4 years before he broke up with me and thoughout that time i’d wanted to move to Canada but felt restricted because he was here. But then he broke up with me and so i said screw it i’m moving to canada. So that’s how my canada moving decision came to be.

My previous job I was working for International Exchange Programs as the Work Australia Program Co-ordinator for 3 years. So IEP helped me get to Kicking Horse. Ever year IEP has a Job Fair Canada program where Ski Resort employers come to Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne to interview candidates for jobs at their resorts. My brother and I went to the interviews in Melbourne and came back with jobs at Kicking Horse in Golden, BC. We are both pretty excited about it. IEP is great it helps you with jobs, insurance, flights, visas, accommodation and general advice about everything canadian. They also do other countries like Britain, Ireland, USA, Costa Rica and South Africa so if your interested in working or voulenteering somewhere ask IEP.

So there is how i got to be going to canada. Only 56 days til lift off!
