Ignorance is Bliss

March 2nd, 2007

So I had an argument with the old lady. It was over a piece of plastic. Not a large piece either, the one on the top of a network cable. It broke off, she flipped out thinking that her computer was broken because of this plastic bit was missing. It is funny how misinformation and ignorance can create paranoia. The old lady was planning on buying a new cable. I told her not to, that I would fix it and have it back to her the next day. She didn’t want to listen. Somehow the whole “I’ve been to college and studied computers for 3 years, plus made hundreds of cables” didn’t register with her. So I took the cable and fixed it. Took me 5 mins. I brought it home and she wanted to see if it was fixed, I showed it to her, plugged it in. TADA! It worked! (I also checked it at work as well, just to be sure. Always do.) She also accused me of playing with her computer, and turning on the guest account. For starters, I am a geek. Why would I use the guest account? No privileges, can’t do shit with it. I would have easily gone for the Admin account, thru the back door. I’ll still irked by that, she was thinking that taking the network cable out of the computer will infect her PC. This I told her that neither of us have touched her computer at all. I don’t think she believed me. I think she was more upset that she couldn’t pay her online gambling games than anything. She is so paranoid about her computer, that she will get a virus or something that she lives in fear of anyone touching her computer. In fact I think that she lives her own life in fear, fear of the unknown. She keeps on talking about a couple that were killed in Mexico. Saying that she wouldn’t go to Mexico cause that could happen to her. I say it doesn’t put me off going. She is flabbergasted that I am like that. When I explain that she could use the same argument in going to Vancouver or Calgary, or any other town. She has nothing. It is all where you go I say.

What has got me laughing the most is that she has ideas of what I have done, but nothing really to back her up. Ok, a Guest account was turned on. Her grandson was in town. Unfortunately he was drunk, so surely couldn’t have touched the computer!! Bologna! I am ranting I know. Haven’t done this for ages. I just hate how she was wrong, but won’t say so. She is an angry woman. I pity her.

I can now see how ignorance in the world can create confusion and paranoia. It has done it in the past, and will continue to in the future. There are too many wars and conflicts where ignorance has been used as a backdrop to create war. I think the US government uses the ignorance of it’s people to create mass panic. The whole terrorism push by the US has created a greater problem. My old lady is a terrorist. She terrorises me, drives me made. Sure she ain’t the same as someone that want’s to blow themselves up. Still is a terrorist though, in my eyes anyhow.

Calgary- It’s not that bad

February 20th, 2007

I Just spent a few days in Calgary. People say that it is a shit place, that it has nothing to do. When i was there, i had plenty to do. I would have liked to spend more time in the City. Basically cause it is run down, and needs work. It would be a great place to take some really cool photos. I didn’t end up taking many, cause well i was looking for a new lense. Didn’t find it either, bugger.  Other than that i chilled in the North East and went down to the Bow river, it was good fun. Caught up with my friend, Ange as well. She is a cool chick. I will hopefully post some photos of my time there, the only time i took my camera out really. I did get to experience a Chinook though, that was awesome. It was -24 in the morning and +3 in the afternoon. Cool stuff!

Enjoying it

February 9th, 2007

Just wanted to write a quick one, at this stage i am really enjoying living over here. Everything seems to be working out. I enjoy the work I’m doing. I work lifts on weekends and am doing IT work during the week. It totally rocks. Hopefully something can work out and i can stay longer. Anyhow this was only a short post. Boarding tomorrow, it has been snowing all day!

Concussion

February 2nd, 2007

My head hurts. It might be caused by the 3 times that I hit it today. It just might be. I fell 2 times in the same spot. It is a sucky spot, everyone that comes to the top of the Gondola has to pass this spot. It’s on the track that the sleds and every vehicle uses to get to the top. It is also very hard, and hurts like (excuse the French) a mother fucker to fall. First time wasn’t to bad, just caught an edge, and WHAMMY! I was down, slid for a bit. Mainly on my shoulders, round in circles almost going off the wrong side of the mountain. It was quite the ride. It is annoying to fall on he cat track, cause you need to strap out and slide your way down the hill. Takes for ever.

Second time I fell, was just as good as the first, almost better. I fell and this time slid sideways and was right in the way of everyone coming down the mountain. I don’t like to indulge in self pity so got straight back up after a few seconds and kept on going. Decided to go down Think twice to, should have thought twice. It was icey and just crazy.

3rd and final fall was right near the bottom, I was almost going to call it quits for the day, cause of the other 2 falls. Although I had some better witnesses this time. Lauren and her brother’s friend from Australia, Victor were right there. I was coming down, almost at the bottom. On a green run (beginners) and got a bit close to Lauren, so tried to turn away, and WHAMMY! I fell on my hip/ass and head at once, did a few commando rolls. I thought it would have looked quite good. As soon as I fell I had a few seconds before the second impact, so I let out a French word or 2, mainly Oh fuck. It was not fun, sat there for a few seconds whilst everyone waited. It must have been a while, cause Lauren had time to unstrap from her board. I managed to make it down the bottom ok. My head hurt so bad, it was a really bad headache. Got to the lift shack, went inside and asked them to call Ski patrol. Just to make sure, cause I have had a few head injuries before. I’m a bit sensitive about my head and injuries.

So they concluded that I had a concussion and to go home and take it easy. I don’t plan on drinking for tonight and to take it easy tomorrow. I have to get my board fixed anyhow, so we will see if I do any riding tomorrow anyhow. So that is my day, I still have a sore head like a bear, but I’m alive and got a Panadol in me, so things are looking up. Hopefully I’m going out to Moberly tonight for some wings, yummy wings.

16 hours

January 31st, 2007

Yes i had a tops Australia day. Ate Tim Tam’s, won some Vegemite, drank some beer (but mainly rye/whiskey drinks) I worked out that i drank for approximately 16 hours. It was fun, and it didn’t end up messy either!

The day started the night before! I listened to the Hottest 100 from Triple J. So surprised that Augie March won. The next day i made my way up at 12, when i got up to the hill partake in the celebrations, they didn’t happen. I was quite disappointed, they were going to do lots, but mostly everything didn’t work out. However the Highlander did have it’s shit together. They had Aussie Burgers (with egg, pineapple and beetroot or “pickled beet”) I didn’t have one, but instead had lots of drinks, before heading down to town. The taps was the place to be for the early part of the night. I met up with Christine and her friend Ange. They were funny, Christine was drinking Caesars. For those that don’t know Christine is my Supervisor.

After a while we were joined by another bus load of Aussie’s that had come from the Highlander (it is on the hill) they were around for about an hour, then disappeared over to Packers. Christine and Ange were riding the next day, so left around 12. I meandered over to Packers, where i proceeded to drink more, play some shit pool. I kept on missing the ball! Not even getting near what i wanted to hit. It provided lots of fun for those that were watching! I then had to take care of my friend Vanessa, who was quite more drunk than me. Not really take care of, just made sure she was safe. An eye in her direction. So.. the pub closed at 3am, I left, with Vanessa’s bag, she followed. It was my way of getting her away for that ugly guy. We walked over to Seven11, for chicken. Sign on the door- “No Chicken” What! we still go in, and Vanessa proceeds to ask the attendants for the next 5 minutes for Chicken, to which we all reply, No chicken! We stood at the Bay Marie for about 5 minutes staring, there was only wedges in there. Trying to decide what to buy. It was funny. I then walked Nessa home, she couldn’t really walk on her own. When we got to her house, she basically passed out in her room. I slept over. Woke up at 9am, way to early for me in the state i was in the night before. I actually felt quite good, rye drinks like me. No Hangover. Nessa however was still drunk, she had to work though. I got the day off, I’m smart!

I then met up with Ange and Christine, and wished Ange good luck boarding. She was so excited about going seeing she had a new board and bindings. I wish i could have boarded, but my knee is still playing up on me, sucky! Then i wanted to leave, didn’t happen. I tried to get a lift down for about 45 mins, either they were snobs from Alberta or they were full. I gave up went back inside and chilled till around 3, when Kristine was finished boarding. (Yes it is a different Kristine)

I managed to score a lift down the hill straight away with Kristine, we then hung out all arvo. She forgot her house keys, so we walked around for a bit, went to another Christine’s house. I then had dinner with Kristine and Jay (or James), Christine and another dude. It was ok food. Note: I have still not been home yet.

I then decided to walk home and get clean, and headed over to Christine’s house to watch movies. They were not to bad, Employee of the Month, then the scary The Decent. Had to watch some SNL to get over the scary movie tho. It was a fully awesome few days, i then also headed out on Sunday night as well. Monday night i slept!

Australia Day and my first injury

January 30th, 2007

Well my first injury of the mountain (excluding bruises) is a sprained ankle, yep it is nice and puffy after a big stack on the mountain. I also ran into a tree and have bruised and battered my thigh. Lovely. I kept saying to myself, that tree is coming closer and closer and closer and damn, hit it and broke a branch with my thigh. One of my good friends also knocked herself unconscious too, maybe i should buy that helmet now??
It was a beautiful day on the mountain tho! Check out pbase site for photos!
But Australia day was awesome, we had VB, timtams, vegemite and even had burgers that had beetroot, eggs and pineapple on them. You have no idea how good it was! I wore my australia shirt and wallabies scarf so felt very australian.
So now i’m just resting my ankle and taking it easy

I got a cold

January 17th, 2007

It sucks. I have had it for the last 5 days. It started as a “i can’t swallow” then went to a “i can’t breathe” then it moved onto a “my heck hurts” then finally at the moment it is at the “my neck and head hurt” I came home from work at 2pm today. When i got home i had a 2 hour sleep and im still tired. I was meant to be working for Amanda tomorrow, but managed to switch that. Hopefully 4 days of R&R will help me get better. I hate being sick. It. Sucks.

My Birthday Weekend!

January 17th, 2007

Wow! That was a good birthday weekend. It all started on Friday night when a group of 14 of my friends and i went up to Eagle’s Eye- which is Canada’s highest resturant by the way! The wine was amazing, tried a bottle of wine that cost $120!! The food was divine- had a steak and soup. And the chocolate platter was the best thing i have ever tasted!! My god, it was just a perfect evening, with great company, great food and great chocolate and wine, what more could you ask for??!!

Saturday morning i slept in, then Telsin came around and we went bowling and had coffee and lunch. Bowling here is an experience, great fun but it is only 5 pin bowling which are attached to strings so they can set them back up again. You also only have a hand size ball in which to bowl with, so no ten pin bowling and no stuffing your fingers into 3 holes. The place is called “Down Memory Lane”. So cute and a lot of fun. Got a few strikes too.

Saturday night, luke took me out for a nice romantic dinner! lol No, we went to a really cute and romantic restaurant called the “Kicking Horse Grill” and had some more divine food. I had the Artic Char (fish) and luke had a nice steak followed by a creme brulee (?? spelling??). We then walked over to The Roadhouse pub and met up with all the people i had invited there, i think about 20-25 people came which is a nice turn out. We froze our arses off on the way there tho!! It was -19C.

At the Roadhouse, DJ Czech was playing and so we drunk and danced our little butts off. Needless to say i felt very rough having to get up the next morning to work. Very rough! Phil got a drunken phone call from me which would have been pretty funny. But in the end it was just a fantastic weekend. Check out my photos on pbase.

Fuck its cold!

January 12th, 2007

Today on the mountain is -28C!!! (and thats not even with wind chill) There is even a frost bite warning out. I put some boiling water out on the road this morning and i swear in under 1 min it was frozen solid! It’s just nuts, today is one of those days that i am glad that i work inside.

We have also had about 1 metre of snow in the last week and the mountain is so quiet that you can have first tracks at like 12pm! (gondola opens at 9am so that gives you an indication)

We are still having a problem with the roads being closed due to avalaches so it’s a whole new experience.
